XCarb™ low carbon emissions steel for Shell offshore facility in Malaysia

The MLNG PSC gas field in the Malaysian shallow water (offshore Sarawak), operated by Sarawak Shell, is in continuous development. ArcelorMittal Energy Projects was awarded in January 2023 with the delivery of structural beams for the two main parts of the project in Sarawak.

Twenty years of partnership

The partnership between ArcelorMittal Energy Projects and Shell has been going strong for over 20 years. Additionally, both companies share the same vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Shell is actively working with ArcelorMittal on energy supply and decarbonisation solutions, working with several ArcelorMittal steel plants around the world.This established relationship also helped build trust and the reliability of ArcelorMittal’s products and services. ArcelorMittal’s low carbon emissions steel and services such as project management, transportation and overall support, played a critical role in the success of the Sarawak offshore platform project. The synergy between ArcelorMittal Energy Projects and the ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products division helped to further strengthen the valuable relationship with Shell, leading to continued collaboration.

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced beams also helped Shell’s sustainability goals, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship.


895 MT of XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced beams

For this project, ArcelorMittal Energy Projects, in close collaboration with ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products, provided in total 895 MT of XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced structural beams. The beams are made from recycled steel (scrap), using 100% renewable electricity in an electric arc furnace on the sites of ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products in Luxembourg.

By using high levels of scrap steel and renewable electricity, XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced products have an extremely low CO2 footprint that can be as low as approximately 300 kg of CO2 per tonne of finished steel when the metallics are 100% scrap. 

The low carbon-emissions steel solutions offered by ArcelorMittal are well in line with Shell’s mission to limit any impact on the environment and support the transition towards a lower-carbon future. XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced beams also complied with the projects’ specifications, as well as the EN 10225 norm. It’s a privilege to deliver low-carbon emission steel products to Shell for the first time during the 20-year-long partnership.

Scrap and renewable energy: the levers of low CO2 steel

To produce XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, ArcelorMittal uses up to 100% scrap and renewable electricity coming from renewable sources such as solar and wind power. ArcelorMittal estimates that XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel has a carbon footprint as low as 0.3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel product when the metallics are 100% scrap, which is certified by a published Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
