ArcelorMittal at Wrocław Bridge Days, 27-29 Nov.

From November 27 to 29, ArcelorMittal participated in “Wrocław Bridge Days” Seminar organised by the Department of Bridges and Railways at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, the Lower-Silesian District Chamber of Construction Engineers and the Polish Bridge Constructors’ Union.

Over 250 visitors from business and academic world gathered at the Congress Centre of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, in Poland. The seminar is intended to be a forum for the exchange of views, experiences and new ideas. It focuses on organisational, technical and legal issues concerning changes that occur in modern bridge engineering. Like in the previous years, the seminar was preceded by profiled workshops. This year’s edition is entitled “Bridges and the environment”.

ArcelorMittal Beams & Sheet Piles

ArcelorMittal was represented by Wojciech OCHOJSKI, Dawid ZAJĄC (both Technical Sales Manager Steligence®), supported by Dennis RADEMACHER (Bridge Development Leader Steligence®), who gave a presentation on preliminary results of an ongoing comparison study on different bridge solutions in concrete versus steel/composite. The study, which is executed by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), demonstrates all the benefits for road and railway bridges with rolled sections for the superstructure and sheet piles for supports and abutments. The saving of time in the construction phase and the limited maintenance of these bridges reduce significantly the overall cost of the project.

Moreover, the external costs generated by traffic disruptions due to maintenance work are drastically reduced. Another speech with AM support was about a breakthrough project from STRABAG company (Bogusław PILUJSKI, Magdalena BIEGAŃSKA, Dariusz SOBALA). The authors presented a unique size net arch railway bridge over the Vistula river in the city of Kraków, It was the first time that the developed net-arch technology based on heavy HD rolled sections was used for a railway bridge (Link to the investment)

The next speech was delivered by Błażej BARTOSZEK from design office PROMOST Wroclaw – Railway bridge in Dąbrowa Górnicza using composite dowels: new system development of composite railway bridges (Błażej BARTOSZEK, Adam STEMPNIEWICZ, Wojciech OCHOJSKI, Adam ADAMCZYK, Grzegorz NATONEK, Wojciech LORENC). The presentation was on a new through bridge solution using PreCoBeams, familiarised on the Polish market with the first executed project. The main benefits of the technology (optimised consumption of steel, reduced construction height) were shown with the technical aspects of the designing route as well as steps of the fabrication. Visitors had the opportunity to experience the animated 360°-movie with 3D goggles, showing the benefits of using long products in bridges. Further, they could take advantage of having the related technical documentation (HISTAR®, Benefit of steel solutions in bridge design, Sales Programme, Bridges, DB Filler-beam tables) and specialists to answer their questions.

About “Wrocław Bridge Days” A series of seminars known as “Wroclaw Bridge Days” was initiated in 2005. It is a joint scientific and technical project that aims to familiarise Polish engineers with the latest domestic and international achievements in bridge building and to show changes in domestic communication infrastructure. ArcelorMittal is a regular partner of the venue since 2010, delivering or participating in more than 15 lectures since.
