The new car park is part of a broader plan of Aeroporto di Bologna, financed partly by the European Investment Bank (EIB). The project includes measures to mitigate its environmental impact and promote sustainability, to ensure that the airport’s expansion aligns with its environmental sustainability goals.
Hence, to support the environmental goals of the project owner, ArcelorMittal, through the Steligence® team, proposed to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the steel structure by delivering the steel in XCarb® recycled and renewably produced. This is ArcelorMittal’s brand for steel produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF) with high levels of steel scrap and produced with 100 % of renewable electricity (from solar and wind power sources) for all the manufacturing processes in the mill, including the rolling of the sections.
XCarb® recycled and renewably produced hasa carbon footprint from cradle to gate (production processes) significantly lower than steels manufactured in the traditional way with a blast furnace (BF/BOF) steel. The Global Warming Potential (GWP) of XCarb® sections manufactured in Luxembourg is 333 kg of CO2-eq / tonne of sections (based on an Environmental Product Declaration), which can be compared to more than 2,300 kg of CO2-eq / tonne of sections produced in the traditional route (average data of a Blast Furnace / Basic Oxygen Furnace steel).

With 2,200 parking spaces, the new multi-storey car park has been designed to significantly increase the parking capacity at Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna (Italy). The bearing structure consists exclusively of steel beams and steel columns manufactured by ArcelorMittal at the sites of Differdange and Belval (Luxembourg): HD columns (mainly HD 400x216 and HD 320x198) and IPE beams (mainly IPE 500 and IPE 270), in steel grades S 460 M, delivered with the XCarb® recycled and renewably produced certification.
These beams and columns were partially delivered directly to the steel fabricator PICHLER projects in Bolzano and partially to the ArcelorMittal Distribution Solutions site in Flero.
